In Thursday's editorial, "Our loss of will," the independent Editorial Board cited a speech by Reynolds Price sixteen Founders' Days ago. The phrasing used to capture the way in which it was delivered, however, was careless and insensitive.

Though the offense was unintentional, the Board neglected to consider how the idiom could be construed.

The Gallup poll will never ask Republican-registered voters, "Would you vote for McCain/Palin if John McCain were African-American?" The Republicans nominated a woman for vice president 24 years after the Democrats already broke that barrier. How many Republicans would vote for an African-American? Since they have not nominated an African-American or ethnic minority for president, we will never know.
