In the tradition of the Life of the Scholar series and the university's Fall Forum program, Gardner-Webb is set to host "Christian Perspectives on the Right to Die" on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in Blanton Auditorium.

Leading the event is Paul D. Simmons, clinical professor at the University of Louisville's School of Medicine and adjunct professor in the philosophy department at UL. Simmons, an ordained Baptist minister, teaches classes on various aspects of ethics, ranging from business ethics to human rights.

Simmons' background speaks to his knowledge of ethics and the issue at hand. He is currently the director of The Center for Ethics: Ministry, Business and Medicine at ULSM. Previously, Simmons was a professor of ethics at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as well as director of the Clarence Jordan Center for Christian Ethical Concerns.

The forum will be set up as a panel discussion with Simmons as the key speaker. GWU professors, Kent Blevins of the religious studies department and Doug Dickens of the M. Christopher White School of Divinity, will respond to Simmons' address.

Dickens feels that the panel format will promote scholarly discussion.

"It is the nature of the event," said Dickens. "We are an academic community, and we learn from debate. It is part of the process."

Following Simmons' lecture and the panel's response, the forum has allowed time for a short question and answer session with all three speakers.

To compliment the forum, the Gardner-Webb theater department will produce an original play by Scot Lahaie, director of theater at GWU.

"Dogfall" addresses the topic of doctor-assisted suicide through drama. The production is set for Nov. 19-22 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 2:30 p.m. in the Millennium Playhouse.

The forum is a free event hosted by the university. Seating is on a first come basis. After the forum, the community is encouraged to proceed to the O. Max Gardner Recital Hall for a reception.
