After only three weeks since opening, business has taken off, said Creswell. With only one other salon within three miles of Boiling Springs, Creswell says, "I think there's enough people here to serve all of us."
And she's probably right.
Boiling Springs is a rapidly growing community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau and N.C. Office of State Budget and Management, the town's population has increased by almost 33 percent over the past five years, from a population of 3078 in 1999, to 4579 as of May of this year. And that doesn't include the many new developments springing up right outside the city limits.
Many people are moving to Boiling Springs in favor of schools with the reputation of Boiling Springs Elementary and Springmore Elementary. Creswell and her husband,Chris, decided to move to Boiling springs three years ago so their two boys, Christian (8) and Casey (10), would be in the Boiling Springs school district.
With six years of experience behind her as a stylist at Christy's and Company in Shelby, Creswell knew what it would take to run a successful business. A first time business owner, Creswell said making the decision to start her business was "a very big step."
"I prayed about it a lot and doors opened, then some closed," she said. "But everything just fell into place and so I just stepped out on faith and I feel like it's the right thing to do, and so far so good."
Seeing a need for a salon in Boiling Springs, Creswell started thinking about opening a salon about a year ago when Mainstreet Video still operated in the space she now occupies. When the video store went out of business, she said she jumped at the opportunity to occupy the space.
Major renovations, which took two months to complete, transformed the plain white walls of the old building into a spacious, warm and friendly atmosphere, said Creswell. Carpet had to be torn out and new flooring put down.
Creswell has five employees working with her, including esthetician Hilda Lail, who provides skin care, facials, ear candling, waxing and stress relief massages for the face, hands and feet. These services usually last from half an hour to one-and-a-half hours. Creswell is planning to add a nail technician and a massage therapist to the salon along with two new hairstylists. Tanning beds are to be added after the first of the year.
Walk-ins are welcome at the salon, although it may be wise to start scheduling appointments due to the growth in the salon's business. Talk of the Town Salon and Spa offers Paul Mitchell, Matrix, Bed Head and Biolage styling products and Repechage products for skin care as well as gift certificates. Hours are Tuesday through Friday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Call Creswell at (704) 434-0027 for more information.
