The Gardner-Webb swimming team is treading water as it waits for a response from the NCAA in regards to a self-imposed penalty for a rules violation.
The violation, self-reported, happened because some members of the team would stay in the pool and continue swimming after practice, said Scott Larson, GWU's assistant athletic director. Due to GWU's policy on supervising swimmers, GWU Swimming Coach Mike Simpson stayed to watch.
At GWU, all people that are swimming in the pool must have a lifeguard on duty at all times, even if they are Bulldog swimmers, for safety issues, said Larson. In this case, the lifeguard was Simpson.
The NCAA limits the amount of supervised practice time to 20 hours per week.
However, after going 2 1/2 hours over per week, GWU turned itself in to the NCAA and Atlantic Sun conference.
The proposal by GWU is that there will be a "reduction in the amount of required practices," said Larson.
"The NCAA will most likely accept the penalty," he said, although "there was some confusion on what the rules are."
GWU is currently awaiting a response from the NCAA.
