We've all seen those big recycling bins up around campus-but have Senior John Olson has-enough time thinking to create a Race for Recycling, which raises awareness of recycling on campus and in the community, as well as raise money for recycling bins.

"This is a community-wide effort," says Olson. "Recycling needs to be in every building. It's not covered enough. Hopefully, this race will get every department involved."

His main effort, the Race for Recycling, involves running races sponsored by the Running Club and Tri Beta.

They are run along the Broad River Greenway and are open to all students interested in raising recycling awareness.

The first race was run on May 3, and another took place on Sept. 13.

The next one is set for March 2004.

Olson hopes that all departments on campus will want to get involved in these races and possibly even sponsor them as well. He also hopes to use the money raised from the races to buy recycling equipment for the campus, such as bins in which to put cans, paper and glass.

These events are also great ways to get the university and the community to work together, Olson said. They help promote recycling awareness and also help the town of Boiling Springs promote the river, he said.
