After an 8-9-1 campaign last season, the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team has started the 2004 season with four wins in the first six games.

The new season brings on new challenges for the Lady Bulldogs as newcomers to the team attempt to fill the shoes of the seniors from last year's team.

Head Coach, Kevin Mounce, expects his freshman to step and help the team improve from last season.

"This is an adjustment period for them," said Mounce about his newcomers learning how the GWU system works. "They are getting the hang of it and then they will be able to contribute a little more."

The main goal for this year's team is to improve on last season, said Mounce.

"We are just going one step at a time and trying to get better each game," said Mounce. "We want to win every match on the field and get into the conference tournament again."

So far the plan is working for the Lady Bulldogs. At this point last season the women were 2-4.

The 2004 season is looking upward as UNC Asheville fell to GWU on Tuesday, 2-0. The game was never in doubt for the Lady Bulldogs as GWU Woodworth was able to notch her eighth goal of the season in the 36th minute.

Woodworth received a pass from teammate Liz Kier before slipping a shot passed the Asheville keeper.

GWU kept the lead through half and added an insurance goal, late in the game by Brittany Woods who scored her first goal of the season off a pass by Lauren Sochacki.

Asheville managed to get off only three shots, while only two of them were on goal. Freshman keeper, Corinne Razem saved both shots and tallied her second career shutout for GWU.

The 2-0 win was pleasing to both the coaches and the players.

"We came out and played with confidence and it showed in the score," said junior midfielder, Lauren Potts. "The field was a little rough, but we adjusted to the surface and got it done."

After losing their previous game to Davidson 2-1 in overtime on Sunday, Mounce was pleased with the team's performance.

"We responded very well after a tough loss on Sunday," said Mounce. "We came out and played well."

Playing well is nothing new to Woodworth this season as she was named the Atlantic-Sun Player of the Week last week. After Tuesday's game, she has accumulated an incredible 22 points on eight goals and six assists for the season.

For her impressive play, Woodworth also received national recognition by being named to the National Elite Team of the Week by women's soccer authority Soccer Buzz.

She is joined by players from 10 other schools to complete the 11-player roster.

Woodworth and the Lady Bulldogs will be back in action today at 4 p.m. on Varsity Field against UNC Wilmington.
