It's not very often that I, or many students, agree with something that the university is doing when it comes to restricting students. But after four years, I think we have finally agreed on something.
Currently, university police is taking steps to increase parking regulations. Chief Barry Johnson said he wants to make this university a pedestrian campus. I agree.
Come on guys. We are 18 to 22 years old. Most of us are very capable of walking. Most of us could use the exercise.
Now, I don't want to look like a hypocrite if you see me driving around campus. This year, I became a commuter student, which makes parking a frustration of mine. I drive about 15 minutes to campus every morning, 20 if I get stuck behind a tractor literally and then I have to drive around another five minutes looking for a parking space. The science and English buildings are the worst. If you live in the apartments, or anywhere else on campus for that matter, there is no reason why you should drive to go to biology or Brit. Lit. That is just lazy. Some students drive 20, 30 even 45 minutes away to get to class on time. I know, that is their choice, but make it yours to walk to class.
Professors also are having a problem finding parking, which is a main reason the crack down on parking started. They have a right to park in their reserved spots. Hopefully, you don't park in a handicapped spot if you are not handicapped, so why park in a spot reserved for a professor? They don't come park in front of your dorm or apartment.
I lived on campus for three years. I tried to walk almost everywhere. I occasionally would drive to the Comm. Studies building for an 8 a.m. class or late at night, but it's all the way across campus from the apartments and it gets cold early in the morning or late at night. But living in the apartments and driving to math class just seems illogical.
There are things that administrators need to do as well. First, they could offer more and better parking. For example, the gravel lot behind Craig and Withrow is a mess. Cars park anywhere. There is no organization. Also, kids are getting tickets at University Commons, yet they added a whole new apartment complex with no new parking.
