The Gardner-Webb University softball team opened their season with two consecutive losses. However, the team was paired against Florida A&M and DePaul-both of these teams have made the NCAA tournament in the past.
"It's going to be an extremely difficult schedule this season," said Head Coach Tim Cole.
Cole said his team's goal this season is to make the Atlantic Sun Conference and get a bid on the NCAA tournament. A bid in the NCAA tournament would be a first in school history for the softball program.
Cole said making the conference would be huge considering the softball program at GWU is not fully funded and is competing against teams that have full financial support.
Veteran players this season include Seniors Stacie Reichert and Rachael Riopel. Both ladies have made second team All-Conference and are hoping to have a successful senior season.
"We have as much of a chance to make the tournament as ever, but were going to make some noise," said Reichert. "My goal is to knock off a big team."
Senior pitcher Stephanie Taylor, along with Reichert and Riopel, promise to be a strong support for the team this season, said Annie Lewis, assistant coach.
The Bulldogs are back in action on March 4 for the GT Buzz Classic. GWU does not return home until March 22 when they play host to Appalachian State at 3 p.m.
