As a fall sports season at Gardner-Webb is winding down, it is time to take a look back at the slate of fall sports and the highlights of each.
Men's soccer
The men's soccer team just concluded what coach Tony Setzer called, " A bittersweet season." The Bulldogs finished the season with a 9-7-2 record which Setzer considers a success but his team failed to reach the conference tournament one of the team's goals at beginning of the season. "Soccer is truly a game of inches," said Setzer. " If the ball bounced a little differently in those key conference games that we lost we would be playing in the tournament." The Bulldogs got off to a hot start, going undefeated tender during the first eight games of the season. But then the team lost six out of the next seven games before the team rebounded to win four out of their five games. " The guy decided to get together and go out in a blaze of glory," said Setzer. " And I'm proud of that fact."
Volleyball:
The Gardner-Webb volleyball team saw its 2005 season come to an end with a 30-22, 30-16, 30-15 loss at Winthrop on Tuesday night. The match marks the final collegiate contests in the careers of Gardner-Webb's seniors Carrie Brinkley and Deshay Duddy. The pair end their careers as two of the most productive players in Gardner-Webb's six-year Division I history.
Brinkley padded her GWU DI record assist total by tossing up 27 more helpers on Tuesday night to finish her career with 2,574. Brinkley also ends her career as the school's DI leader with 121 service aces.
Duddy closed her career as the top blocker in GWU's DI history with 216 total blocks. Duddy also ranks second with 387 games played and 108 aces over her four years at Gardner-Webb.
The Lady Bulldogs end their season with a 9-28 record winning one tournament in the early season and placing second in another.
Golf
The Gardner-Webb Men's Golf team wrapped up their fall season yesterday, as they competed at the 2005 WCU Intercollegiate, played at the par 71 Trillium Golf Links. The tournament was hosted by Western Carolina University.
