Many girls are wondering who was behind the wonderful Valentine's banquet on the 15th and those nice cards with the chocolate hearts attached. That would be Gardner-Webb's very own Joanna Helton. A third year senior Joanna is double majoring in religion with an emphasis on missions and sociology. Joanna is currently taking 18.5 hours, doing 15 hours a week of volunteer work at the office of community engagement with Sandy Hammett, a 6 hour a week internship at the greater Cleveland county Baptist association, she does work study in the AV department of the library for 10 hours a week, she is the small group coordinator, she is involved in a small group, a relationship small group, she's a REACH leader, she teaches middle school Sunday school at her home church in Polkville, she helps a first grader to read at boiling springs elementary, she is the CMA fellowship coordinator, she's currently writing her thesis paper, and she has a boyfriend! "Sometimes, I think most of the time I really enjoy doing all of this because I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it, it only feels like a lot when I have to do lots of mundane tasks," says Joanna. Even during our interview many people stopped by her room to ask questions or just to see her, she had bags and bags of invitations t o the valentine's day banquet around her room and homies lined her loft. Yep, she's also an avid collector of those little homies that you can get out of the quarter machines. "I love them a lot and get very upset when people try to steal them at least once a week, they remind me of people I've met throughout my life, that's why I like them."
"Every week I have to make a to-do list and sometimes I change it two or three times, an important thing to make sure you don't get burned out is to set aside time to have fun which is when I usually get to see Chris, that's usually between 12 and 2am," Joanna answered when asked how she managed all of this and a boyfriend. Above that she added, "I like him a lot!" Joanna and Chris have been dating about a year and two months. Chris added this about Joanna, "It is very hard to describe a woman of such character in two to three sentences. I am and have been blown away by her amazing servant hood, her ability to always smile through the vast amount of work she does, and lastly I am blown away by the spirit of God in her. I am not just saying this because she is my girlfriend, I have and will continually be blown away by the work of God in her life."
